This is one of the most common questions we get from developers building seafront promenades, port facilities, and seaside resorts: is galvanizing alone enough to stop a steel light pole from rusting near the ocean?
Galvanizing offers significantly better corrosion protection than spray-painted steel, because the zinc layer forms a metallurgical bond with the steel surface instead of just sitting on top of it as a coating. This zinc layer is much denser than paint, and it also provides "sacrificial" protection — even if the surface is scratched, the surrounding zinc will corrode first and protect the exposed steel underneath. Paint offers no such sacrificial protection; once it is scratched, bare steel is exposed directly to salt air.
Here is what many buyers do not realize: there are different grades and processes of galvanizing, and for a pole that will actually survive years of salt spray, wind-driven rain, and humidity, three factors matter far more than the word "galvanized" on a spec sheet:
Pole wall thickness — a thin-wall pole corrodes through much faster than a thick-wall pole, even with the same coating.
Inside-and-outside (double-sided) galvanizing — many budget poles are only galvanized on the outside, leaving the interior exposed to condensation and trapped moisture, which is often where rust starts first in coastal climates.
Zinc coating density, measured in microns (µm) or grams per square meter (g/m²) — higher density means a longer service life before the zinc layer wears through.

For seaside and marine-exposure projects, we recommend a minimum coating thickness of 65 microns, full compliance with ASTM A123 hot-dip galvanizing standards, and a polyester powder top coat over the galvanized layer for additional UV and salt resistance. We also recommend requesting a salt spray test report (ASTM B117) before confirming a bulk order — this single document tells you more about real-world durability than any marketing claim.
